Omagh bombing was carried out by CIRA & RIRA

The Omagh bombing atrocity which claimed the lives of 29 people including unborn twins, was "carried out jointly by the CIRA and RIRA", it can be revealed.

The information from an FBI spy also identified more than 100 poeple from both dissident republican groups, but Sean Hoey the south Armagh electrician accused of the bombing was not one of them.

The intellegence is contained in an eleven-point set of "agreed evidence" handed to 37-year-old Hoey`s trial in Belfast today.

Reading from the document, defence QC Orlando Pownall outlined how FBI spy David Rupert was recruited by the terrorists and between 1997 and 2001 reported back to the FBI who shared the intellegence with the British Security Services.

In particular, Rupert referred to three individuals identified only as G1, G2, and G3, one of whom, "possibly being G2 is suspected by police of involvement in the Omagh and Newry Courthouse bombs".

The information not only indicated that Hoey was not one of these three men, the intellegence document also quite clearly stated that he was never identified by Rupert in any of over 2000 pages of emails to his FBI handlers.

Final submissions in the trial, where Hoey from Mollys Road Jonesborough faces a total of 56 terrorist charges including Omagh, begin on Tuesday after which Mr Justice Weir is expected to reserve his judgement on the 54 day case.
