You weren't afraid to know me
—by Míchealín Daugherty
You weren't afraid to know me
Even now the cats come out
When they see my name
What did it cost you to hold
Your own, listen with closed ears?
I hope you gained
more than lost, I hope the claws
left few scratches
few loves lost, as you crawled
in unflamed fires.
Seems that you gave me credit
Even though you knew
It wouldn't have mattered
I would still have been there
Don't you know?
But no one can tell you what
To think, what to know
What to love
Such strength in man
I'm proud to know.
And now I can watch
As they hate me
Pay their pounds for photos
And false stories
Spew their venom.
And you don't tell me anymore
What they vomit forth
It doesn't matter
Because you are still there
A beautiful man
You taste like poetry in a cup.Copyright © 2004 Ireland's OWN.
