On the Deforestation of Amerindian Lands by Venezuelan Ranchers
—by Gardiner M. Weir

Today such men will soon undo
The age of Nature's Art.
A time when only jungle grew
And hushabye'd a chosen few —
The people set apart. The tractor's roar,
The buzz-saw's screaming whine
Tear out what went before
The Age of Earth's Decline.

When once was wild was tamed to field
Enclosed by barbed wire fence.
The virgin ground is raped to yield
A harvest boon so they can shield
Their egoist pretence. Such hunt the free!
In progress drunk they cannot wait
'Till every man's a refugee
From Nature's balanced state.
