Doorway of Understanding
—by Míchealín Daugherty

I had not realised how much I still love you
I thought the bad times had killed it.

I took me this long to learn
That some of the pain you caused me
Was not intentional, was due to cultural differences,
was due to ignorance.

Maybe you are a better person
Than you sometimes seem. Yet...
You show your passions, but then
You cannot express yourself.
You show your love,
But then your self-absorption engulfs it,
Kills it, like a cancerous cell.

Where is the real you in there?

How many years will it take for us to understand
Each Other?

How many misjudgments, manufactured
Heartaches, misunderstandings
Must we endure?

The sex is good, But sex is a universal language
And sex does not right the wrongs.

They say, 'opposites attract, Maybe so.
But being opposite presents more challenges, disagreements,
And where is the middle-meeting-point?

Is it only sex?
Or will a common bond grow between us?
What binds the opposites?
What glues love together?

The love is there, but what Key
Opens the Doorway of Understanding?
