Gavrinis Cairn
(megalithic temple, Brittany)
The Gavrinis megalithic temple on the Isle Des Gavrinis is dated around 3500-4000 BCE. The inside of this raised cairn is carved with spiral patterns that may represent the sunrise or the continuity of life. The serpentine markings are also thought to represent the coiled energy of the earth, or the serpent, which for the Celts, represents rebirth.
