Ballad of Anthony Gough.
(Cathal OhEarcain)

(Goes to the tune of Paddy's Green Shamrock Shore)

Shantallow now it is mourning,
For a soldier who is dead
Another lad is cut down
By foreign British lead
No more we will see him with his smile,
In spite of Ireland's pain
For he is dead and gone
His land to free
And he did not die in vain.

Anthony Gough was his name,
A thorn in England's side
To see his Foyle murmur free
Every low and high tide
To see Shantallow free again,
Away from English hands
These were his aims in his short life
To free Ireland like Bobby Sands

He brought protection to Derry town,
You saved Galliagh and Pennyburn
You saw David Russell and Gerard Craig
And now it was your turn
22nd of February year '86,
You died for Derry too.

Farewell family, farewell comrades
He bids you adieu
He'll watch over you, dear Shantallow
And the Creggan, Bogside, Carnhill
He'll still defend you from the foe
He was killed at Fort George by the Brits
There was no return
To his family dear to his Irish home,
He is dead in Pennyburn.

To you soldiers here who still walk our streets,
With your heads raised high
You think you own Ireland
But it is time to say goodbye
Dungiven, Carrickmore, Keady town
You walk in the no-go zone
To you soldiers here listen up,
Leave Tony Gough's land alone!
