hollow-faced Irishmen
—by The Wandering Bard
They called it the Famine, a euphemism for a holocaust in which a country was stripped of its resources and its dignity for the comfort of its captors. Their ghosts cry out across time for justice…
Long before the Long Kesh Ten
Hunger took hollow-faced Irishmen
Giving them only peat for bread
Providing relief only in the ranks of the deadThe English nobles, meals were made
With food that in Ireland should’ve stayed
Landlords took their toll and more
Sending forth the reaper for the poorCoffins were a luxury, and for most
A shared hole was all they could boast
The fortunate poor fled the land
Fleeing from Westminster’s death handLong before the Long Kesh Ten
Hunger took hollow faced Irishmen
In the night I hear their cries
As tears run freely from my eyes
