Yuletide Mermaid
—by Michaelin Daugherty

for Paddy

I have some news that only would understand.
[others would look at me with dismay]
Because I am finally free from them
Finally free of the twistedperverselove of a dysfunctional family.
I have finally severed all ties...i feel like the greatest
Of all weights has been lifted off my soul,
Paddy! I can breathe again!

Well, almost...
There's still a small fear inside me
That they will seek me out under false pretences
Just to get in a few more stabs
(of emotional torture at least).
Again, only you would understand...and
Only you would know: Does this fear ever go away?

It has been more than a year since we parted
ways, Paddy. How I miss you --
sometimes always ...yes always.
How I wish our toobig stubborn egos had not clashed in
that final unfortunate climax.
How alike we were ...are.

Yes, I do wish we could regain
bheith mor le duine...
bheith mor "muid" -- the lotus eaters
.
Minus the glass dancing of course.
Just magnolia. Can you trust me just
a wee bit Paddy?

Well, it is almost Yuletide again...
And here I stand with the Lovely Mermaid
You sent me for the Tree...because
It looks like me...or reminded you of me...or...
O mo chroi --
Remember the Mermaid?
